Makko Powder (Machilus thunbergii)
High grade, finely ground Makko powder for making incense cones, sticks, coils and trails.
Makko binds powdered woods, resin, herbs and spices together to form your desired incense shape. It also promotes smooth, even combustion while imparting little of its own scent besides a mild and pleasant woody aroma.
Suggested use:
• Use approximately 1 part Makko for every 5 parts of fine wood powder (2 grams Makko, 10 grams aromatic wood/herbs).
• Some types of wood, coarsely ground materials and extruded sticks may require a larger amount of Makko.
• Recipes containing finely powdered resin may require less Makko as the resin can act as a binding ingredient, especially if it contains water soluble gum (Frankincense is about 30% water soluble) or is in a semi-liquid state (Labdanum, Styrax).
• If you find that your dough is too crumbly or that your cones/sticks are too fragile, that is a sign you need more binder.
There are instructions and troubleshooting suggestions included on the packaging.
This Makko powder is sourced from Japan where it is called "Tabu no ki."
